Heroism ~ August 30, 2011

I'm not sure why I chose to heroism as a topic today . . . I've been kind of going in alphabetical order as far as topics and heroism seemed to leap off the page at me today.

I didn't feel very heroic today. Well the morning started out great. When I got to work (which is something I love ~ my own business Coastal Serenity) this morning it seemed like things spiraled out of control. The only part I had any control over was my reaction to it and yet I chose to let it make me grumpy. Only for a little while though, but still . . .

The day did get better and is ending on a more positive note. I know that tomorrow will be a better day.

Quotes

True heroism goes beyond a single act of courage-it is a lifestyle of loving mankind everyday, the effects of which ripple from each practitioner out into the world. ~ Chris Benguhe

~ I like this one. It reminds me how we are all connected.

We all live in suspense, from day to day, from hour to hour; in other words, we are the hero of our own story. ~ Mary McCarthy
~ Yes we are . . .

The beauty of the soul shines out when a man bears with composure one heavy mischance after another, not because he does not feel them, but because he is a man of high and heroic temper. ~ Aristotle

~ I have days where it seems like nothing can go right, I know we all do. I have met people who it seems that nothing ever goes right for. One thing after another piles up on their shoulders. Yet some of these people shake it off and have a great attitude and continue to get up every day. Writing themselves as the hero of their story.

What You Need to Live a Life of Purpose ~ I think this goes great with my topic today - heroism. I believe that when we live our lives with purpose it is a heroic act. When we stand up for our values and live them every day despite what others think that is heroic. ~ “Suffering unnecessarily is masochistic rather than heroic.” ~ Viktor Frankl

Tiny Wisdom: Are You Afraid of Success? ~ "We all deserve to live lives that feel passionate and purposeful. Gratitude ~ August 29, 2011

I am grateful for many blessings in my life. I am grateful that I live in a place full of beauty (the ocean, the night sky, the deer and wildlife that surrounds me). I am grateful that I am able to do a job that I love. I am grateful that I do not have to rush anywhere. I am grateful for all of you who have joined me here.  I am grateful . . . What are you grateful for?

Quotes

There are times I forget to be grateful
easier to see things that are wrong
as I dishonor the the gifts I've been given
with worry, angst and woe.

There are times I need reminding
of the things I take for granted each day;
my children, my home or a stranger,
sent to brighten my way.

Take some time to say thank you
for the blessings that color your day;
Those colors will form a rainbow,
and chase the darkness away.

~ Marianne Goldweber

i thank You God for most this amazing
day; for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes.
~ e.e. cummings

. . . a basic law: the more you practice the art of thankfulness, the more you have to be thankful for. This, of course, is a fact. Thankfulness does tend to reproduce in kind. Forgiveness today. I know how hard this can be.  I come from a family that knows how to hold a grudge . . . and to top it off we're a stubborn group too.

If we are truly to live in the present and maintain positivity we need to let go of these old feelings of hurt. We need to forgive those that have hurt us and to forgive ourselves the pain we have caused others.

Quotes

Forgiveness of others is a gift to yourself. ~ Larry Miller

~Forgiveness frees you up for more positive energies. Instead of spending your energy being hurt or angry. Forgiveness leads you to being in the present moment.

Enligtenment ~August 27, 2011

No input from me today . . . going to let the words stand for themselves. I hope that you enjoy.

Quotes

to know people is wisdom, but to know yourself is enlightenment.
to master people takes force, but to master yourself takes strength.
to know contentment is wealth, and to live with strength resolve.
to never leave whatever you are is to abide, and to die without getting lost-
that is to live on and on.
~ Lao Tzu
We are on a journey of becoming that which we already are. That is the impossible paradox of our lives. ~ Leonard Jacobson

Enlightenment is a state of wholeness, of being "at one" and therefore at peace. At one with life in its manifested aspect, the world, as well as with our deepest self and life unmanifested - at one with Being. Enlightenment is not only the end of suffering and of continuous conflict within and without, but also the end of the dreadful enslavement of incessant thinking. What an incredible liberation this is! ~Eckhart Toller - The Power of Now
A loving journey of transition begins by nurturing self care. If we honour our inner selves we not only live our divine blueprint, we also embrace the richness of humanity as we promote spiritual enlightenment. ~ Micheal Teal

It is not until you awaken and become fully present that you will realize that you have not been present. It is not until you awaken that you will realize you have been asleep, dreaming that you are awake. ~ Leonard Jacobson

Tiny Wisdom: On Realizing You're Complete ~ I may have posted this one before . . . but I really like the quote that makes up the better part of this post.

I have Some Bad News For Some of You ~ "The thing is my friends, you can do all those things you crave but there is no magic pill.  You have to do the work, put in some effort and sometimes be willing to risk, fail and try again.  Sometimes it’s hard.  And that’s okay.  This is how we learn what really matters."  ~ Bonnie has this one right on. There isn't a magic pill. Life takes work. Sometimes you are going to fail. Sometimes you are going to falter. But that's okay as long as we learn a lesson from it and get back up and try again. And remember to never give up.

Dreams ~ August 26, 2011

What keeps you from moving towards your dreams?  Fear . . . fear of what? Failure? What others may say? I do not believe there is ever a reason to not move towards your dream. I know that it is not always easy and there may be some things that stand in our way. As long as we always move forward one step in front of the other we will eventually get there.

Quotes

Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dream. ~ Paulo Coelho

~ Pursuing your dreams is a joyful process, we should do it as often as we can. Never mind the fear, naysayers and what ever else holds us back. How can pursuing your dreams ever be wrong.

The distance between your dreams and your reality is always traversable.  If you can dream it, you can make it so. ~ Daisaku Ikeda

~ Absolutely. We are never given a dream without also being given the ability to make them come true.

Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake. ~ Henry David Thoreau

~ Because that means we are living our dream.  What could be better than that?

Courage ~ August 25, 2011

Courage today. I believe in moving forward and sometimes that takes courage. The courage to simply put one foot in front of the other, the courage to stand up for the things we believe, the courage to simply live our lives the way we know we should and there are some days when it is really "the quiet voice at the end of the day saying 'I'll try again tomorrow'.

Quotes

We all have the ability…we just don't all have the courage to follow our dreams and to follow the signs. ~ Paulo Coelho

~ When were younger we thought we could do anything. As we grew we learned things like doubt, fear, anxiety, and limitations.  I think we can all do anything we wish to as long as we have the "courage to follow our dreams". We all have the ability.  We may not always have all the skills or knowledge necessary, but that can always come later.

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow." ~ Mary Radmacher

~One of my favorite quotes. Many times we think of courage as some heroic act; but sometimes it is smaller than that. The little things in life usually matter the most, so sometimes courage is as simple as just getting out of bed in the morning.

Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drowned your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. ~ Steve Jobs

~ Steve Jobs former CEO of Apple . . . some big changes in his life at the moment. It takes courage to make those big changes, to be the person who you know you are, to follow your heart and your intuition. Are you following your heart?

~ Because who doesn't desire a day, a week, a month or a life of bliss.

Live your dreams and you nurture your spirit, nurture your spirit and you dance your bliss, dance your bliss and the world becomes a celebration of authentic loving harmony. ~ Micheal Teal

August 23, 2011

I'm trying something a little different today. I hope you enjoy it.  After each quote I include a reason I picked it or tell you something about me in relation to the quote.

I'm not quite sure why I chose Admiration for a quote topic today, for some reason it just reached out of the page at me. Who in your life do you admire? Someone who inspires you to do better, someone who you would hate to disappoint, someone that has helped shape the person you are today.

Quotes

"In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." ~ Jane Austen from Pride and Prejudice by Mr. Darcy.

~ I chose this quote because I can hear this as my mind speaking to me.  We often pay attention to the little voice in our head that tells us we are not worthy, pretty enough, thin enough, too frightened, etc.  Meanwhile there is another voice trying to tell us that we are worthy enough, pretty enough, thin enough, courageous enough, etc. Thanks to Mr. Darcy for reminding me to love and admire myself, and to stop believing the little negative voice in our head.

If I can line up the people who, back through the ages, have gone at life in ways I greatly admire, then I can feel all their strength supporting me, all their standards and values pointing the way in which I am to go. ~ Bonaro W. Overstreet

~There are several people in my life that I admire and whose standards and values point the way in which I am to go.  My Grandma was one of those. She passed away a few years ago and I miss her everyday. She was an extraordinary woman. When we all gathered as a family she would make sure that everyone's favorite was there. For my husband, her baked beans, for my daughter a shrimp ring, etc.  I also really admire my daughter. She is firm in her beliefs and values and stands strong even when faced with peer pressure. She makes the room light up with her smile.

Because of a friend, life is a little stronger, fuller, more gracious thing for the friend's existence, whether he be near or far. If the friend is close at hand, that is best; but if he is far away he still is there to think of, to wonder about, to hear from, to write to, to share life and experience with, to serve, to honor, to admire, to love. ~ Arthur Christopher Benson

~There aren't many friends like this out there. I hope that we are all fortunate to have a friend like this in our lives.

The Legend of Bagger Vance ~ August 14, 2011

I wasn't going to post today. But I changed my mind.

I know I've probably devoted a note or a post to this movie before, but I am going to do it again. Because it is just that GOOD.  I don't know if I've mentioned it or not before, but The Legend of Bagger Vance is one of my all time favorite movies. I'm not sure I can find the words to explain to you how much I LOVE THIS MOVIE.

If you haven't seen it rent it; if it isn't in your DVD collection buy it.  If you would prefer you could always get the book which is written by Steven Pressfield and said to be roughly based on the Hindu sacred text the Bhagavad Gita, where the Warrior/Hero Arjuna (R. Junuh) refuses to fight. The God Krishna appears as Bhagavan (Bagger Vance) to help him to follow his path as the warrior and hero that he was meant to be.

Now you may think this movie is about golf, but I don't think it is really about golf at all. I think it is about life.  And all of the advice that Bagger gives to Junuh can be applied to just about anything you do in life.

The Field

In The Woods

Your Authentic Swing

How Junuh and Bagger meet

I could probably go on and keep posting clips from the movie . . .

As Bagger says "Golf is a game that can't be won; only played. I think the same can be said of life.  I hope you enjoy these clips.

We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share.  This is a precious moment, but it is transient.  It is a little parenthesis in eternity.  If we share with caring, lightheartedness and love, we will create abundance and joy for each other.  And then this moment will have been worthwhile. ~ Deepak Chopra

Oneness is very simple: everything is included and allowed to live according to its true nature. This is the secret that is being revealed, the opportunity that is offered. How we make use of this opportunity depends upon the degree of our participation, how much we are prepared to give ourselves to the work that needs to be done, to the freedom that needs to be lived. ~ Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee

Quotes

The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny - it is the light that guides your way. ~ Heraclitus

Your morning thoughts may determine your conduct for the day. Optimistic thoughts will make your day bright and productive, while pessimistic thinking will make it dull and wasteful. Face each day cheerfully, smilingly and courageously, and it will naturally follow that your work will be a real pleasure and progress will be a delightful accomplishment. ~ William M. Peck

The supreme courage of life is the courage of the soul. It is living, day by day, sincerely, steadfastly, serenely,-despite all opinions, all obstacles, all opposition. It means the wine of inspiration from the crushed grapes of our sorrows. This courage makes the simplest life, great; it makes the greatest life-sublime. It means the royal dignity of fine individual living.
~ William Jordan

I have been thinking a lot lately about patience, tolerance and compassion. Recently a young adult came into our lives who seems to be testing all of these. He reminds me of people who I met when they they were a young adult who are now considered among my closest friends and parts of our family.

I am trying my best to remain patient, compassionate and tolerant, but I am finding it
difficult. I know people come into our lives for a reason. And maybe that is his role in my life - to test my patience, tolerance and compassion.

How do you maintain patience, tolerance and compassion with the people that test yours?
